Forced commit; previous commit also included:
- eliminate a malloc()/snprintf()/free() in the native exec(2) case and
  in the easy emulation environments.
- Allow the brand emul_path (ie: /compat/xxx) to be NULL rather than
  needing it to be an empty string that is always referenced.
