Here is how you have to do this:

 - (before this script) as root, create the zpool.  let zfs mount it
   for you.
 - umount it.
 - delegate the zfs permissions to user 'portbuild'.
 - *as user portbuild*, remount the zpool.

Now you are free to proceed.
